1700 square foot New Dwelling connected via breezeway entry to a renovated 1930's cottage.  Studio & detached garage at located at the rear of property.  A screened porch was added in 2015

Constructed as personal residence for the architect, a new energy efficient dwelling was tied to an existing cottage by means of an open breeze way.  The cottage became the guest house and an Architect's studio is located at the rear of the property. 

Oriented for solar and constructed of durable and energy efficient materials.  The dynamic arrangement of elements and the appropriation of the architectural language of the local vernacular - standing seam metal roof, cedar shake details, half walls on the porches, traditional round columns - have produced a sensitive contextual response within a thoroughly post modern vocabulary.

First Floor:  Superior Walls, (insulated precast concrete wall system),  concrete slab on grade
Second Floor:  SIPS (structural insulated panels) for knee walls and roof, pre-engineered floor framing
Exterior Finishes:  H&C concrete stain on Superior Walls, Hardie siding and cedar shingles with Sikkens finish, Miratec trim, Traditional standing seam metal roof on sloped roof, EPDM on flat roof.  Andersen windows and doors.  Velux skylight in shower.
Interior Finishes:  Polished concrete slab on first floor, sustainably harvested local hickory on second floor, reclaimed soapstone tops and surrounds in kitchen and bath, salvage doors, Toto bath fixtures, Ikea cabinetry, WindsorONE trim.

Design Process

Modern Addition to Old Farmhouse

This beautiful old farmhouse was in need of an addition to accommodate the activities of a young family with modern sensibilities.  The side door had become the primary entrance for the home yet provided no protection from the weather and the upstairs space, an enclosed porch from a previous era,  could no longer provide enough space for all their projects.  The second floor expansion provided a communal space for family life as well as a cover for the entry to the home.

This house, constructed in 1942, had been abandoned and neglected for 40 years prior to purchase by the nephew of a former owner.  It’s restoration was a true labor of love.

Green Affordable Dwelling

This home is a one level, two bedroom-one bath dwelling of 1005 square feet.  It utilizes insulated precast concrete exterior walls, poured concrete floors, bonus trusses for a walk-up attic for future expansion and a metal roof.  The home uses ground gutters in lieu of roof gutters and a rain garden is incorporated to minimize off site storm water drainage.  EarthCraft Certified.

Borden Road Addition

There were three clients for this project: a married couple with two college bound children, and the mother of the wife, who was invited to downsize from her current home and create a living space addition to the couple's residence.  The addition provides an independent dwelling for 'Mom': one bedroom, one bath with open kitchen-dining-living.  It is connected to the existing home by a Flex space which bridges between the two and dwellings.  Laundry facilities and a craft space are housed behind the barn doors.  The entire addition was placed at grade level for ease of access.  Interior steps connect the new Family Room to the existing Kitchen.

I’ve always dreamed of having a clean, modernist home, and I’m happy to say that Alice and her team at Atelier Cohen led the way to making that dream a reality! I couldn’t be more happy with the project, my house looks like it could be featured in a Kinfolk magazine. I expressed my wishes of having a clean, natural interior aesthetic and they truly delivered – the natural light in my newly designed home is to die for. They also helped me turn my dated, drab living room into a spacious and cozy space in which I can’t wait to host a party. I couldn’t recommend Alice more, if you’re looking for easy collaboration and top-notch design, you have to reach out to them!

I’ve worked with Alice on a few renovation projects and am still floored by her dedication to design and space planning. Never have I experienced a hiccup or missed communication with Atelier Cohen, and home projects tend to create those sorts of problems! I had the pleasure of working with Alice on redecorating my childhood home that hadn’t been touched up since I was a teen in the 80’s. I knew it needed a huge refresh aesthetically, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I had a consultation with Alice about my hazy ideas and she was able to understand my tastes and needs after just one chat! The whole design process was so streamlined and thorough that my fears of things going awry totally vanished after the first few meetings. She walked me through every step of the process, from sharing sketches and moodboards to purchasing the final pieces of furniture and decoration. Working with Alice at Atelier Cohen has got to be my greatest investment, I highly recommend their services.
